The Botanical Garden in Edinburgh was founded in 1670 and it is the second oldest botanical garden in Britain (Oxford is the oldest). The garden started as Scotland first physic garden and was originally no bigger than a tennis court.
It now is spread across four separate sites in Scotland (Dawyck, Logan, Benmore and Edinburgh) and it has over 34,000 plants. The gardens have been moved several times, once it was in the city centre at Nor’Loch which is the current site of Waverly Train Station. Due to its expanding size and also the expansion of the city itself, it was then moved to a green field site at Leith before finally being moved to its final site of Inverleith in 1820.
Today you can explore the 70 acres of fantastic gardens and it is only a short walk away from the city centre. With free entry and around 7% of the worlds know plant species on display its well worth a visit on a sunny day in Edinburgh.
