Edinburgh Zoo was opened in 1913 and it is set in 82 acres of parkland west of Edinburgh City Centre in Corstorphine. It is Scotland’s 2nd busiest tourist attraction with over half a million visitors a year.
The best known attraction at the Zoo are the Penguins, they first arrived at the zoo in 1914 and this was the fist Zoo in the world to both breed and keep penguins with the first hatched penguin coming in 1919. The penguin parade takes place on a daily basis as the penguins walk or waddle around the plaza for visitors to enjoy.
There is plenty to keep you entertained at the Zoo, there is the free Hilltop Safari where you are driven around on a 30 minute journey around various enclosures with a running commentary given to inform you of the main attractions and facilities at the Zoo.
The Zoo is also home to the UK’s only Koala and has many interesting and educational areas such as the Rainbow Landings birds area and Close Encounters areas with snakes and cockroaches.
