Scotland gained devoloution in 1999 as part of a New Labour election pledge. This meant that for the first time since the Act of Union in 1707 that Scotland would have its own parliament.
There were many designs put forward for the new parliament and also some debate on the location where it was to be built. It was decided that Hollyrood would be the site and the design that was chosen was the controversial one designed by the Spanish architect Enric Miralles.
The cost of building this unique modern building was estimated to be around £270 million but it ended up being nearly double that coming in around £431 million.
Still a highly controversial building among Scots, many of whom are still not sure that a modern architectural building is suited to the area which is best known for its Victorian era architectural buildings
